Curriculum Aims

We believe that every child should develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to become a positive force in their world. 
We aim to provide excellent teaching and remove barriers to learning. We use the National Curriculum as a starting point for providing a whole curriculum  through which all children have an equal opportunity to make progress, develop the skills they need to move onto the next phase of their learning and to carry with them a joy for new learning and discovery . We want all the children, particularly disadvantaged children, at St. Matthew’s to develop their confidence and increase their resilience when faced with a challenge,  to know ‘It’s OK  to make mistakes’ and that this is an essential part of great learning.  We aim to ensure that our children are able to communicate confidently and effectively through both their spoken and written language by the time they leave St. Matthew’s. We want all children to develop a love of reading and the skills to enjoy reading into adulthood. We aim to equip the children with the knowledge and skills to make positive lifestyle choices in respect of their physical health, their wellbeing and healthy relationships. We believe that our children should develop a secure understanding of the Fundamental British Values, which are underpinned by our Christian Values, recognising the importance of equality for all so they are able to respect and celebrate the rich and diverse community within Bolton, Britain and the wider world. We want them to recognise themselves as Global Citizens now and in the future.

Each area of our curriculum lives out this intent and it is reflected in the statement of practice for each subject and the provision across the school.
